John W. Moore was born about 1840[1]-1845[2] in Grimsby[3], Ontario[2], Canada or Ontario County, New York.[4] He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 23 years old, married and working as a gunsmith when he enlisted on 21 March 1863 in Readville, Massachusetts.[4] from Morris Island, South Carolina.[1]

Company D was present at the Battle of Olustee on 20 February 1864.
