Robert L. Moore, a medical pioneer regarded by his colleagues as the dean of Dallas pediatricians, died of pneumonia Sunday at Presbyterian Village North. He was 86.
Dr. Moore, a longtime practitioner and clinical professor, was one of the first doctors in Texas to use new lifesaving drugs such as penicillin and sulfa.
For more than 50 years, Dr. Moore was pediatrician to hundreds of Dallas children. He followed in the footsteps of his late father, Dr. Hugh Leslie Moore, who was the state's first pediatrician.
"Robert Moore is probably the most prominent and important pediatrician in the history of Dallas," said Dr. Charles Ginsburg, chairman of the pediatrics department at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and chief of staff at Children's Medical Center.
"He set the standard for what pediatrics in Dallas should be-- and he set incredibly high standards," said Dr. Ginsburg, who also holds the Robert L. Moore professorship in pediatrics at the medical school. "He was a visionary who saw the future of high-quality medicine."
Dr. Moore was instrumental in the drive to build Children's Medical Center next door to the medical school, Dr. Ginsburg said.
"He was a conduit for major philanthropy," Dr. Ginsburg said.
The native of Van Alstyne, Texas, graduated from Yale University and received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University's medical school. After serving residencies at Johns Hopkins Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital, he returned to Dallas in 1934 and joined his father's pediatrics clinic.
Dr. Moore and his father practiced together until 1950, when the elder Dr. Moore died.
During his long career, he was a professor at Baylor School of Medicine and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and served on the staffs of the Bradford Hospital for Babies, Baylor University Medical Center, the Texas Children's Hospital and the Freeman's Memorial Clinic.
He retired in 1986 because of declining health.
Dr. Moore was so beloved by others that a professorship in his name was established at the Southwestern Medical Center in 1985, Dr. Ginsburg said.
"Robert Moore took care of all children in Dallas, from the poor to the wealthy," Dr. Ginsburg said. "He was and will continue to be regarded as the dean of Dallas pediatricians." [1]
Robert is buried in Restland Memorial Park, Highland Park, Dallas County, Texas, USA. [2]
