Donald signed up as a member of the 2nd Reserve Rn. of the Grey & Simcoe Foresters "A" Company on May 28, 1942, in Owen Sound, Ontario. [1] At the time, he was too young to join the regular service. Shortly after his nineteenth birthday, on November 26, 1942, he attested for service (again in Owen Sound) and was assigned to the Toronto Scottish Regiment. He would eventually be transferred to the 1st Canadian Special Service Battalion - what would later be known as the infamous 'Devil's Brigade'.
