Biography

Little is known of George William Moore before he married Celia Gertrude Heald. The 1870 U.S. census recorded him as George W. Moore of Millbrook, Mecosta, Michigan.[1][2] Other records show his name as William.[3][4]

The earliest certain record of him is his marriage to Celia on 18 May 1862 in in Columbia, Van Buren, Michigan. Celia was short of her 14th birthday, but their ages were reported as 16 and 26.[5][6] Soon after his marriage, the 1863 Civil War draft records report him in Waverly, Van Buren, Michigan.[7] His draft record, 1870 U.S. census, and the birth record for daughter Rosetta Ann report his birthplace as Ohio.[1][2]

Other U.S. census records for his adult children show confusion regarding George's origins. Some of his family reported his birth place as either 'unknown',[8] Michigan[9][10] or New York.[11] His children were apparently unsure where he was from, and no records have been found for him after 1884.

By 1880, a man of similar age named George W. Moore resided in nearby Big Rapids and he reported his birth location as Pennsylvania in the 1880 census and his 1884 marriage record.[12][13] Celia and George Moore's divorce proceedings prove her former husband was the same man documented in the 1880 and 1884 records because he was served a subpoena in Big Rapids on 01 May 1882.[14] It's acknowledged the divorce proceedings occurred after Celia's marriage to Charles Bark in 1876.

DNA evidence can be used to infer his mother was Elizabeth (Moore) Calvey of Centre Co., Pennsylvania (see discussion below).[15] This evidence is cause to doubt records showing his birthplace as Ohio; he was almost certainly born in Pennsylvania.

Names

  1. George William Culvey, also known as Kelvy[16][17][18]
  2. George William Moore[1][3][4][19]
Based on images of a family Bible, his father appears to have spelled his surname "Culvy" and/or "Calvy".[20]

Occupation

  1. Common laborer[7][12][21]
  2. Farmer.[1]

Parents

John Culvey, a.k.a Calvey and Elizabeth Moore.[20][21]

Birth

30 Apr 1829 in Logan Township, Centre, Pennsylvania, United States.[16][20][22]

Places of Residence

  1. 1830: Logan Township, Centre, Pennsylvania[22]
  2. 1850: Halfmoon Township, Centre, Pennsylvania[21]
  3. No matching records for George W. Kelvy have been found after 1850 and before 1900, including a mandatory U.S. Civil War draft registration.
  4. 1862 to Jun 1863: Waverly, Van Buren, Michigan[5][6][7]
  5. By Oct 1863: Ionia Co., Michigan[3][23]
  6. By 1870 until 1874: Millbrook, Mecosta, Michigan[1][14]
  7. 1880 - 1884: Big Rapids, Mecosta, Michigan[12][13][14]
  8. George W. Moore was not recorded in the 1894 Michigan census.[24] He likely left Michigan by 1894. No matching Michigan death records have been found during 1884 and 1894.
  9. 1900: Jackson Center, Jackson Township, Mercer, Pennsylvania[16]
  10. 1910 - 1921: Mercer County Poor Farm. Coolspring, Mercer, Pennsylvania[17][18][25]
By 1870, George and his family resided in Millbrook Twp. in Mecosta County, Michigan. As shown in the 1870 U.S. census, a 15 Sep 1871 land patent, and an 1879 plat map of Millbrook, his farm was near a property owned by Charles W. Kelley.[1][26] On 2 May 1870, George received the patent for his homestead at that location.[27] George and Celia Moore sold this property to Celia's mother, Rosetta Heald, for $500 on 26 Oct 1870.[28] As of 1879, Rosetta continued to hold this property.[29] According to the plat map, the location of the farm appears to be near 43.552838 degrees north and 85.111153 degrees west.

First Marriage

George married first on 18 May 1862, Columbia Township, Van Buren, Michigan to Celia Gertrude Heald.[5][6] She was born on 07 Nov 1848.[30]
By 11 Oct 1874, George abandoned Celia and their children.[14] Celia apparently was left with no clue concerning the whereabouts of her estranged husband and she remarried on 02 Jul 1876 to Charles Bark.[31] In 1881, while living in Big Rapids, George contacted his estranged wife for the first time since he left her. On 21 Feb 1882, Celia filed a complaint against George with the Mecosta Co. Court and she alleged abandonment. On 01 May 1882, a subpoena was served to George W. Moore in Big Rapids, Mecosta Co.. A divorce decree was issued by the Court on 2 Aug 1882.[14]

Children

George and Celia had the following children while living at their farm in Millbrook, Mecosta, Michigan:[1]
  1. James Frederick Moore (13 October 1863 – 23 May 1943)[3]
  2. Loren W. Moore (15 July 1866 – 27 June 1957)[32][33]
  3. Rosetta Ann Moore (8 Sep 1868 -29 Apr 1936)[2][34]
  4. Ira C. Moore (9 Aug 1872 - 9 Aug 1901)[19][35]

Second Marriage

George married second on 20 Feb 1884, Big Rapids, Mecosta, Michigan to Margaret Campbell (b. abt. 1856).[13] Margaret Campbell may have been related to the David Campbell who lived at the same boarding house as George in 1880.[12] This marriage had no known issue. No other records of Margaret have been found.

Death

2 Dec 1921 in Coolspring Township, Mercer, Pennsylvania.[18]

Burial

Mercer County Home Cemetery, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.[18][36]

Proof G.W. Culvey and G.W. Moore Were the Same Person

There is no doubt that the closest genetic relative to George William Moore was Elizabeth (Moore) Culvey (b. 1787) of Mifflin and Centre Counties in Pennsylvania. Autosomal DNA analysis of G. W. Moore’s great-granddaughter, Anonymous Moore, can be used to prove a genetic relationship between descendants of G. W. Moore and Elizabeth Culvey. Thanks to information gleaned from primary sources and the family Bible of Elizabeth’s son, James McAlvey (b. 24 Sep 1811 likely in Centre Co., PA; d. 28 Apr 1906 in Fulton, Gratiot, Michigan), there is also no doubt that Elizabeth had a son known as George W. Kelvy. The close genetic relationship between some of George’s and Elizabeth’s descendants,[15] and their 1829 and 1787 birth dates, prove Elizabeth had to be his aunt or his mother. However, a mother-son relationship is inferred by the following facts:[37]

  1. Some of Elizabeth’s direct descendants share enough DNA with Anonymous Moore to infer 3rd cousin relationships instead of 4th cousin relationships.
  2. No known DNA matches with closely related persons have been associated with a documented Moore family who raised children in Ohio.
  3. Triangulated, autosomal DNA evidence can be used to infer descendants of G.W. Moore inherited DNA from the father of Elizabeth Moore’s husband, John Culvey. Primary sources infer John was a son of John Christopher Culvey of Logan Twp. in Clinton Co., PA.[20][22] A shared, triangulated DNA segment has been found between a descendant of J.C. Culvey, a descendant of John Culvey, and a descendant of G.W. Moore.[38] A second set of triangulated matches has been identified. In all, 11 descendants of J.C. Culvey's other sons (George, Christopher and Jacob) match DNA with Anonymous (Moore) Anonymous on Ancestry.com.[39] These observations strongly suggest G.W. Moore was John Culvey’s son.
  4. No records have been found that can prove G.W. Moore and G.W. Kelvy were separate persons. No records matching G.W. Moore of Mecosta have been found before 1862 or after 1884. On the other hand, no matching records for G. W. Kelvy have been found after 1850 and before 1900. Unlike G.W. Moore, no matching records for G. W. Kelvy have been found in the Union Civil War draft registrations. A Civil War draft registration would have been obligatory for any men who were born in 1829.
  5. During the U.S. Civil War and until about 1870, G.W. Moore indicated on his Mecosta County records he was born in Ohio. However, 1880 and 1884 records from the same county show George W. Moore, of similar age and vocation, was born in Pennsylvania. The 1880 census also reports his parents were born in Pennsylvania. G.W. Moore’s 1882 divorce records prove these conflicting accounts came from a single person and could reasonably represent a man who tried to hide his origins.

Research Notes

Disputed Birthplace: Five primary sources indicate George W. Moore was born in either Ohio or Pennsylvania. During 1862-1870, all records that report his birthplace indicate Ohio.[1][2][7]. After 1874, both records report Pennsylvania and one states his parents were born there.[12][13] George appears to have reported both locations as his birthplace, but his reason for this inconsistency is unknown. It's possible he attempted to obscure his origins. Genealogical record searches and DNA research have found no matching families from Ohio but have found one that lived in Mifflin Co. and Centre Co., PA.[15] This profile reports Pennsylvania as his place of origin.

Disputed Parents: Many user-contributed pedigrees on Ancestry.com show George W. Moore as the son of Daniel Moore (Abt. 1791 - Aft. 1875) and Catherine (Munsell) Moore (Abt. 1817 - 10 Jun 1873) of Westfield, Richmond, New York. Placement with this family should be rejected because census records show George of Mecosta, MI was not born in New York. Furthermore, census records from Westfield, Richmond, New York show George W. Moore, son of Daniel and Catherine, lived there throughout 1860 to 1880.[40][41][42][43][44][45] Lastly, a matching baptism record for the son of Daniel and Catherine suggests his name was George Washington Moore, bapt. 1832.[46]

Michigan Records after 1884: George W. Moore was not recorded in the 1894 Michigan census.[47] He likely left Michigan by 1894. No matching Michigan death records have been found during 1884 and 1894.

  15. 15.0 15.1 15.2 DNA tree triangulation can be used to infer a genetic relationship between Elizabeth Moore of Mifflin Co., PA and George William Moore of Millbrook, Mecosta, Michigan. Anonymous Moore and Ancestry user R.R. (managed by rbrager88) share 114 cM of DNA across 5 segments. The closest common relative of these persons is Elizabeth Moore. R.R. is a direct descendant of Elizabeth Moore through her son, Samuel A. McKelvey (1824 - 1890) of Logan, Centre, Pennsylvania. Anonymous Moore and Ancestry user J. McNamara share 85 cM of DNA across 2 segments. The closest common relative of these persons is the same Elizabeth Moore. J. McNamara is a direct descendant of Elizabeth Moore through her son, James McAlvey of Mifflin County, PA. Ancestry DNA shows Anonymous Moore, R.R. and J. McNamara are mutual matches. Additional research is needed to confirm this relationship by DNA segment triangulation. This three-way match suggests segment triangulation may be possible.
