Mary volunteered as a nurse during the American Civil War.
Mary was born in 1836. She was the daughter of James Moorhead and Jane Logan. She passed away in 1903.
In March 1864, Mary was assigned to the Special Diet Kitchen of the Cumberland Hospital at Nashville, Tennessee by the United States Christian Commission, the first of its kind, planned by Annie Whitenmyer.
"Mr. Weyman, of the Pittsburg Branch, written on the 17th of March, 1864, which thus fixes an important date in the diet kitchen movement. 'We send to-day, by boat direct, 15,000 pounds of stores and 20,000 feet of lumber, for an extra diet kitchen in Nashville. And also Miss Moorhead and Miss Lathrop, two young ladies of our Committee, to labor three or four months in Nashville.' " - Annals of the United States Christian Commission
