Biography

Joseph Fletcher Moreland, Sr. was born January 10, 1854, in Homer, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, a son of James Wesley Moreland and Elizabeth Ann Witherspoon. He is found at the age of 16 years, as "Fletcher Moreland" on the United States Census of 1870, living with his parents in Ward Seven, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. [1]

On April 16, 1874, in Claiborne Parish, Joseph married (Geneva Cornelia Cripps) "G.C. Gripps [2] Geneva, who was born in April, 1857, in Claiborne Parish, a daughter of Margaret Alexander and David Cripps became the parents of at least six children, before she died October 21, 1906, at the age of 49 years, in Hasse, Comanche county, Texas. [3]

Around 1808, in Texas, Joseph married his second wife, May C. Bradshaw. May was born June 26, 1876, in Goldthwaite, Mills county, Texas. Joseph and May became the parents of six additional children. Joseph and May are found on the Unites States Census of 1910, living in Justice Precinct 7, Lee county, Texas. Two of Joseph's sons from his first marriage, Earnest and Charles D, both born in Louisiana are living in the household, as is newborn Joseph Fletcher, Jr. the first child of his second marriage, born in Texas. Joseph died June 1, 1938, at the age of 84 years, in Lee county, Texas and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, in Comanche. There is a photograph of his headstone on his Find A Grave memorial. [5]
