Biography

Audrey Idelle Duncan of Norwalk, Iowa died on February 5th, 2023. Mrs. Duncan was born January 31, 1927 in Tipton, Iowa to Harley Hanson Moreland and Norma (Dailey) Moreland. Norma died shortly after giving birth to Audrey. Harley then married Ida Stahle Moreland.
Audrey married John Devol Duncan on May 2, 1952 at “Old Brick” First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband John and a son, Bradley John Duncan. Surviving is a daughter, Phyllis Elaine Duncan of Omaha, Nebraska and daughter-in-law, Kathy Hammond-Duncan of Cumming, Iowa; two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren.
A graduate of Tipton (Iowa) High School, Audrey received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. She was a teacher at Grand Mound, Davenport, and Belmond, Iowa and San Antonio, Texas. After teaching 23 years in the Ottumwa (Iowa) Community School District, she retired in 1989.
Audrey was active in the Ottumwa Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, and National Education Association. She was active in the Ottumwa Reading Association, Iowa Reading Association, and National Reading Association. She was a member of the Talented and Gifted Association, having pioneered the talented and gifted programs at the local level. She had membership in the American Association of University Women, local and state Parent Teacher Association, the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association (IRSPA) of which she was Historian for 10 of those years and was a charter member of Friends of the Library in Ottumwa.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ottumwa, Audrey served several years as Sunday School teacher and Elder.
