N.B. This is the Elizabeth Morgan Prickett/Pricket who married Thomas Pricket/t on 11 October 1809 in Monongalia County, Virginia, and was divorced from him on 16 Jan 1844. It is not the Elizabeth Prickett, daughter of Jacob (Jr.) and Jemima Kendall Prickett, who married William Wyatt in Monongalia County on 15 Dec 1814.
Elizabeth Morgan[1] was born on 26 January 26, 1796 in , Monongalia County, Virginia],[2] one of nine children of Evan and Camilla Hartley Morgan.
: Elizabeth is said to have been noted for her beauty and intellect.
On 11 November 1809, she married Thomas Prickett in Monongalia County. She bore him five children, three sons and two daughters:
When her daughter Jane (?) was 1 year old Elizabeth took off with a man named H Merrifield, taking the 2 youngest daughters with her.[3]
Divorce
On 15 June 1839, when she was in her earlier forties, her husband, Thomas Prickit, filed a petition for divorce with the Clerk of Circuit Superior Court of Law & Chancery for Tyler County, writing "Soon after your pet'r was united in marriage with the said petitioner, he . . . in the defense of his reputation which . . . had been unjustly assailed . . . petitions, had too much reason to believe that the said Elizabeth was a woman of very poor habits, and morals, and that she was wholly unmindful and regardless of her marriage vows. Your petitioner represents that he was informed, and believes, that whenever he was from home, the said Elizabeth indulged in . .. . intercourse with both white[?] and black men, to the scandal of the whole country. . . . in company with a young man by the name of H______ [Harriman??] Merrifield, with whom she lived in open adultery, for some time, in fact untill the said Merrifield abandoned her, from which her life has been one of open prostitution, as hae is informed and believes, and moreover that she has been connected with various houses of ill fame -- the said Elizabeth now resides in the state of Ohio where she has the most of the time since . . . . Your petitioner represents that he has had no consummation or connection with the said Elizabeth since . . ?. nor has she ever offered to return to him. . . . application to the legislature for a dissolution of the marriage contract between the said Elizabeth, and your petitioner."
