Nathan was the son of Jacob and Allie Reed Morgan, formerly of North Carolina. The Morgan family settled in the Dry Creek Community of Tippah County around 1836.

Nathan served as Corporal in Co. F, 23rd Mississippi Infantry CSA (known as the Blackland Gideonites) and married Mary Ann Harris Patterson on Dec 13, 1866 after the war ended.

Nathan and Mary Ann had three sons, Jake, Charlie Marion and William Noah Morgan.
