Biography

Johanne was born about 1592 in Monmouthshire, Wales. According to this site, she was the daughter of Richard Lewis.

Marriage and Children

“John ye son of Lewis Ryketts baptised Feb 22 1591” married Johanne ferch Richard (a cousin most likely) on 3 February 1610. Johanne’s great-grandfather, Lewis ap Ieuan (John) was the vicar of both Abergavenny and Llantilio Pertholey. There is a Lewis Chapel in the church of Abergavenny in his honor. The coat of arms of their family are on the east window of the church of Llanddewi Rhydderch. Johanne’s father Richard was Curate and Vicar of St Teilo’s Church, where John was baptized and their three children were also baptized. It is most likely that John and Johanne met and grew up together in St Teilio’s church since it was the home church of both of their families.

Their three children baptized at Church of St Teilio were:

1) Gwenllian, 5 February 1611 (same name as John’s maternal grandmother)
2) Lettus (Lettyce) 1 March 1615
3) Watkin, 1 January 1621 (same name as John’s maternal grandfather)

Johanne is believed to have died sometime after Watkin was born and before 1633. However, there is no record in the church of her burial.[1]

The twelfth Century Church of St Teilo is a Grade 1 listed building situated on the edge of Abergavenny. The site has been a centre of Christian worship since Celtic times. Land was given to Teilo, Bishop of Llandaff, or one of his followers, early in the 6th Century for a Christian cell 'where Bevan and his companions lie buried.' Pertholey means ‘defiled entrance’, possibly a reference to these early Christian martyrs. Llantilio means ‘the enclosure of Teilo’.[2]

Research Notes

Bio above mentions Johanne's great-grandfather Lewis ap Ieuan. This would be "Lewis Wallis, vicar of Abergavenny and Llantillio-Pertholey, who married Lucy, daughter of Llewelyn Thomas Lloyd of Bedwelty. His full name was Lewis ap John ap Gwilym ap Robert Wallis, and he traced his descent from a junior branch of the family of Wallis of Treowen and Llanarth."[3]

UNKNOWN-114365 and Morgan-21505 appear to represent the same person because: duplicates that need to be merged. Please do not set these as unmerged matches where they get forgotten. If you are a PM or on the trusted list, please determine if she was indeed a Morgan or if her maiden name should be Unknown. Thanks.

From what little I could find, I think her LNAB should be Lewis. She appears to be a cousin of her husband's, but I was unable to find good documentation to support that. Maybe someone knowledgeable with research in Wales/England can find some good sourcing.

One problem is that the PM is inactive, so a G2G post is needed to try and resolve this. I'll create one now.

UNKNOWN-114365 and Morgan-21505 are not ready to be merged because: Last name at birth needs to be confirmed before merge. It appears it should be "Lewis" and she may be a relative of her husband, John Lewis. Needs more research done by someone familiar with sources in Wales.

UNKNOWN-114365 and Morgan-21505 appear to represent the same person because: similar birth/death dates; both married to John Lewis. Need to confirm correct last name at birth.
