A freak accident on a hilly Duluth street has claimed the life of an elderly woman from that city. That death along with three others boosted Minnesota's 1966 record highway fatality count to 922, or 93 more than the total one year ago today. The total for all of 1965 was 877. Mrs. Russell G. Barnes, 81, died in a Duluth hospital Sunday about four hours after she was struck by a car. Police said her husband had parked the car and was walking around the vehicle to check its distance from the curb when the car rolled backward. Mrs. Barnes was struck as she stood at the corner "two or three car lengths" below where the car had been parked, a police official said. Raymond Simning, 35, Green Isle, Minn., was killed early Sunday when his car collided with a Milwaukee Road freight train five miles northwest of Norwood in Carver County. Another victim, James C. Rock, 26, Moose Lake, died Saturday when his car hit a railroad overpass on US 61 about two miles north of Barnum in Carlton County. Mrs. Mabel L. Wicker, 83, St. Paul, died in a St. Paul hospital Sunday. She was injured Friday when she was hit by a car in the capital city. (Austin Daily Herald, Dec. 19, 1966) [2]
An 80 year old Duluth woman died in a Duluth hospital early Sunday afternoon about three and a half hours after being struck by a driverless auto at Lake Avenue and Second Street, Duluth police reported. It is not known if death was a direct result of the mishap. The victim was identified by police as Mrs. Russell G. Barnes, 4318 Gilliat St. She was struck about 10:30 a.m. by her husband's car which had rolled from a parked postion, police said. She was taken by Wilcol Ambulance to St. Luke's where she died in the hospital's intensive care unit about 2 p.m. Police said her husband, Russell, 80, had parked the auto in the first parking place above Second Street on the West side of Lake Avenue, facing south. He set the emergency brake, and then got out to see if the car was close enough to the curb. Mrs. Barnes already was in front of the vehicle and the brake apparently failed as the car rolled forward and knocked her down. Barnes told police he was unable to get back into the car and stop it in time to avoid the accident. Some bystanders pushed the vehicle back into position. Police reported that the only visible injuries to the victim were bruises on her hands and side. Hospital officials said she was being observed for internal injuries at the time of her death. The Police Department's accident squad will conduct an investigation of the mishap. An autopsy was performed Sunday to determine the extact cause of death, Dr. Cyril M. Smith, St. Louis County coroner, reported. Results will be availible today. An inquest will also be conducted, Dr. Smith said. Mrs. Marion Morgan Barnes was married to Russell Barnes in 1908 and has been a Duluth resident since that year. She attended the University of Minnesota and Ft. Edward Collegiate Institute in New York. She was a founder of the Lakeview Garden Club and was active in numerous community projects including Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls, the Red Cross Canteen and the Gray Ladies. She was a member of the Mayflower Guild and the Duluth Congregational Church where she served as deaconess. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Adams, Fargo, N.D.; a son John, Miami Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Georgetta Curtis, Superior; six granchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her husband retired in 1953 as district manager of the National Production Board. ("Duluth News Tribune", Monday 19 Dec., 1966) [2]
