Biography
A native of South Carolina, I grew up in Columbia and now live in Charleston.
I began researching my family's history after my retirement as a reference librarian. My mother's family have been living in the South Carolina upcountry since before or shortly after the American Revolution, and I have enjoyed following many of my English and Scots-Irish ancestors as they moved south from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.
One particular branch of my tree prompted my research into records in England. Ann Wybergh, my 5th great-grandmother, and her husband William Shaw arrived in South Carolina in 1791 from Whitehaven, England. The Wybergh family proved to be a very old family, owners of Clifton manor in Westmorland, England, back to 1365. They intermarried over the centuries with many other Westmorland and Cumberland families. Chasing down those connections has involved learning much about that part of England, back to the medieval period.
As a break from researching my own family, I joined the US Southern Colonies Project to help improve existing profiles of South Carolina colonists and add profiles to link up related people. Because a large group of early South Carolina colonists were Huguenots, I also joined the Huguenot Migration Project. For my South Carolina research, I have drawn on my experience as a researcher and editor on the Biographical Directory of the South Carolina House of Representatives, Volume IV: 1791-1815 (1984) and the Biographical Directory of the South Carolina Senate, 1776-1985 (1986).

I have been trying to find out where I got the middle name Ash from. I failed. I approach her from the Brisbane side of things, and about 20 years ago I found out about my grandfather's contributions to the SCHGM in 1913 on the Brisbanes. I splurged a bit on genealogy back then, and then I wandered off and concentrated on other stuff. Anyhow, I seem to be back, this time via wikitree. My indexing was never perfect, and my Family Tree Maker programme has suffered badly from more than one sudden unscheduled power outage over the years. I certainly did not get the middle name Ash from my grandather's published research conclusions. It was most likely from a distant relly, and more likely than not the result of a misunderstanding on my part. Nevertheless, there was a lot of death around in SC (as elsewhere) back in the eighteenth/ninetenth centuries. Is there anything in the sources to which you have ready access suggesting that Mary Deveaux might have had a previous husband who went and died? Maybe a Mr. Ash? By the time she married William Brisbane she was, it appears, around 25, so she would have had time to have become widowed, alas.
Please don't take a lot of time over this. Not worth disrupting the day job. Nevertheless, if you do surface anything ... well, that would be interesting.

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
