Biography

From the Davenport, Iowa, Democrat & Leader, Friday, 23 July 1926: ASKS CUSTODY OF CHILD HELD IN MISSOURI—Mother Attacks Grandfather in Suit for Modification of Divorce—Court procedings to regain custody of her daughter, Jessie A. Brumwell, detained by the juvenile court authorities at Lamar, Mo., following the arrest of the child’s grandfather, William Brumwell, were filed here today by Mrs. Daisie G. Kallenbach, wife of Henry Kallenbach, 2917 Telegraph road. The mother was divorced from Jesse [actually Jessie] C. Brumwell on Jan. 31, 1921, the court awarding the custody of the two children, Jessie A. and Alan L., to the father. The girl, however, has made her home with the grandfather in Missouri, according to the mother. The grandfather was arrested on June 28, charged with immoral and improper conduct with a child, and is held to the grand jury under $2,500 bond. The juvenile court authorities at Lamar have refused to return the child to its father and will not permit her to return to the grandfather. Mrs. Kallenbach is asking the court for a decree modifying the divorce by awarding her custody of the daughter. John Weir is her attorney. [Note: Daisie seems to have had two other children with Brumwell, daughter Appalona, born c1913, and son Clarence W., born c1920; both were living with her and Henry during the 1925 Iowa census].
