"In 1929 Congress enacted legislation that authorized the secretary of war to arrange for pilgrimages to the European cemeteries "by mothers and widows of members of military and naval forces of the United States who died in the service at any time between April 5, 1917, and July 1, 1921, and whose remains are now interred in such cemeteries. Fannie made this journey which is documented in the photo of her by Lee Gilbert Ray's grave side. "

The death of Lee Gilbert Ray (Ray-6028) occurred on the last day of WW!. Fannie was part of a group of gold star mothers that were taken to France to view the graves of their children that died in the war. When Fannie returned from France she brought the American Flag from the grave and a short suit for grandson Harold Lee Ray (Ray-5844). His profile picture shows him waving the flag and wearing the suit.
