John was born in 1868, probably at Waungarlan, above the Cwmsymlog valley. The census of 1871 has him living there with his family and his age is given as 3.

The family moved to Syfydrin, further towards Plunlymon mountain as noted in the census of 1881 and 1891. By the second census at Syfydrin John was working as a lead miner, although he was probably also helping his father who was a shepherd.

In 1911 John is living with his wife Catherine (nee Edwards) and four children at Penlan Issa, Llanfihangel genau'r glyn.

John is not present on the family census entry for 1939. At this time Catherine and some of the adult children were living at Moelgolomen in Elerch.
