Charlotte was an artist of acclaim. She studied under J.R. Herbert R.A. She illustrated Edmond Spenser's Faire Queen chapter 'The Legend of the Knight of the Red Crosse' and Emily Barrett Browning's 'Rhyme of the Duchess May' [1].
Charlotte was the second wife of her cousin Weymouth Schreiber[5], in 1875 moving to Canada to live with him and his three children in the Deer Park area of Toronto at 'Bradwell Lodge' (later renamed 'St Clair House') on St. Clair Ave, and after 1885 at Springfield on the Credit (Erindale), a rural area west of Toronto where they lived in a family compact of sorts with Weymouth's two sons and their families.
In the 1881 census Charlotte (age 47) was recorded as married in York, York, Ontario, Canada.[6]
Charlotte continued to paint and produced many fine paintings, many of which are still in Canada. She was a charter member (and the only woman till 1933!) of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1880. Her R.C.A. diploma picture, The Croppy Boy (The Confession of an Irish Patriot), 1879, hangs in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Many of her works are held in private collections.
During her time in Canada, Charlotte did not abandon her skills as an illustrator. Some of her illustrations are found in three children's books that were published in Toronto.
Her principal exhibitions included the following:
Charlotte was very active in raising funds for St. Peter's Anglican Church in Springfield-on-the-Credit, where she worshipped and played the organ. She raised money through various unique means: the sale of birds from an aviary she maintained on her property; the sale of long-haired Angora cats she raised; and from the sale of her own artistic works.
Charlotte was also very generous with her time, providing advice and inspiration to various students — Ernest Thompson Seton, George Reid, Lucius O'Brien and T. Mower Martin, just to name a few. She was very proud of her students and delighted in their success.
After her husband died in 1898, Charlotte returned to England.
In 1901 she is living in Paignton. With her is visitor (her step-daughter-in-law's sister) Violet Grahame of Canada. She employs two live-in help.
