Longtime greenhouse operator dies

ERIE - LaVern H. Morrin, 65 of Erie, who with his brothers had operated L.A. Morrin Farms Inc. in LaSalle until 1982, and who was known for the barbecue chicken be cooked at annual area festivals, died at 12:05 this morning in St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo,of complications from surgery.

He had been seriously ill for four weeks.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Bennett Funeral Home, Erie Chapel, where St. Joseph Council 7413, Knights of Columbus, will conduct a service at 8 p.m. Wednesday and where a Scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m Friday in the funeral home and at 10:30 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Erie. The Rev. Robert Haener will officiate and burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Erie.

Born May 30 1921, in Erie, he was the son of Lambert and Lucy (Cousino) Morrin. He was married Oct 28, 1948, to Eloise Leckler in St. John's Catholic Church, Monroe.

A self-employed farmer, Mr. Morrin and his brothers, Harold, Woodrow and Orlando, owned and operated the greenhouses at 2204 Wood Rd. in LaSalle for 45 years. They retired when they sold the business in 1982.

He was a Navy veteran of World World II, serving with the Seabees. He was a life member and past commander of Erie Post 3925, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of St. Joseph Council 7413, K of C; James E. Yenor Post 193, American Legion, in Luna Pier, and St. Joseph Church, Erie, where he had served as an usher.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Ronald of Temperance; three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Linda) Wickenheiser of Monroe, Mrs. Leon (Michele) LaPointe of LaSalle and Ms. Renee Collum of Oregon, Ohio; two brothers, Orlando of Erie and Major Wardell Morrin of Norfolk, Va., and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Arnold, Harold and Woodrow.
