Biography

George Morris was born in 1887 in Ecclesfield. He was the son of John Morris and Mary Ann (Mollart) Morris.

By April 5th 1891, they were living in Mortomley Lane, Ecclesfield. George's father was 47, and still working as a coal miner. There were now six children, all boys - Joseph (22), John (17), Charles (15), William (11), Henry (9) and George (3). The three eldest were all working as coal miners. John's uncle Joseph Morris had also moved to Ecclesfield by this time, and was also living in Mortomley Lane.

A sister, Mary Jane, was finally born in June 1891, and she was the last child in the family.

On September 12th 1894, George's older brother Joseph set out from Liverpool for America on the S.S. Ohio. The family group photo was probably taken in preparation for this separation.

George's father died in 1899.

By March 31st 1901, George's mother was still living in Mortomley Lane. There were four of her children still in the household - William (21), Henry (19) and George (13) were all working as coal miners, and the fourth was nine-year-old Mary Jane.

George married Maud Sellars in 1910 in Wortley district.

By April 2nd 1911, George and Maud were still living in Ecclesfield, and George was working as a miner hewer.
