Biography

Charles Eugene Morris of Helena, Alabama, passed away after a brief illness on September 17, 2015.

Mr. Morris was born April 8, 1932, on his family's farm in Blount County, Alabama. His family soon moved to the city, where he was baptized at South Park Baptist Church in Birmingham's West End. Known by his classmates, football, and baseball teammates as "Bean," he graduated from Jones Valley High School in 1950. He attended The University of Alabama, where he pledged Lambda Chi Alpha.

Mr. Morris left The Capstone to enlist in the United States Army and was stationed at West Point. Following an honorable discharge, he returned home to complete his education at Livingston University, where he graduated with a degree in Physical Science.

A devoted husband and father, Mr. Morris was known as a hard worker. He was employed by US Steel Fairfield Works as a metallurgist for 35 years. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, cabinet making, gardening, playing bridge and coaching softball. During retirement, his hobbies included reading, cooking, bird watching, meeting with his breakfast club, and watching Gunsmoke, Shepherd's Chapel, History Channel, Crimson Tide football and Atlanta Braves baseball.

Mr. Morris was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Morris; his mother, Mary Kate Horne Morris; his brother, Robert Kenneth Morris; and his sister-in-law, Betty Gail Parsons Morris. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eugenia "Jeanie" Ruth Eddins Morris; his daughter, Mary Eugenia Morris; his son, Charles Eugene "Chuck" Morris, Jr. (Megan Keating); his grandson, Grayson Keating; his niece, Julie Morris Logan (Brian); his nephews, Michael Morris (Lisa) and Samuel Morris (Janet); and his great nieces and nephews, Shea Morris, Robby Morris, Ken Logan, Savannah Logan, Leanna Logan, Will Morris, Katie Morris, and Abigail Morris.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 26, at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama, with the memorial service at 11 a.m. Mr. Morris's ashes will be interred at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Frisco City, Alabama at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending a memorial donation to your preferred church or animal shelter.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Gene by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Gene:
