Biography

Thomas Morris was born in 1873 in South Stockton. He was the son of William Morris and Henrietta (Sparks) Morris. His father was a labourer.

Thomas' mother Henrietta died in 1879, when he was about six.

By April 3rd 1881, Thomas and his older brother Henry were boarding with William and Catherine Barnes and their children in Stanley Grove, Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire. At some point between 1881 and 1891, William Barnes died, and by April 5th 1891, Thomas' father William Morris was living with Catherine as her husband in Newton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Lancashire. Thomas was 18 by this time, and working as a collier; he was living with William and Catherine, as was Catherine's son Matthew Barnes, who was also 18 and a collier. Also in the household were a nephew and a granddaughter of Catherine.

On December 28th 1895, Thomas married Charlotte Bimson at St Wilfred's Church in Standish. Both were 24 years old and living in Standish, and it was a first marriage for both; Thomas was working as a collier, Charlotte as a domestic servant. The fathers were William Morris (collier) and Luke Bimson (butcher). The witnesses were Robert Urmston and Rosa Emily Coseins.

By March 31st 1901, Thomas and Charlotte were living in Billinge Road, Ashton in Makerfield. They had three small children - William (4), Lynda A (3) and Fred (1). Thomas was working as a collier.

By 1902, when Millicent was baptised, Thomas was working as a colliery contractor - meaning he had made a contract with the colliery to take charge of a particular section of the mine and extract coal from it at an agreed rate per ton. He would hire, pay and be responsible for the safety of his own workers, and be in charge of repairs.[1]

By April 2nd 1911, the family were still in Wigan district. Thomas' father had died, and his stepmother Catherine had moved in with Thomas & Charlotte & family. Thomas' occupation was given as miner, and his eldest son William was working as a pony boy in the colliery.

By 1912, they were living at 4 Queen Street, Highfield, in or near Pemberton. This was still their address in 1914, when the youngest child, Matilda, died.

Charlotte died on 1 Mar 1942, aged 70, in Wigan district. She was buried on 6 Mar 1942 at St. Matthew's, Highfield, Pemberton, Lancashire.

Thomas died in 1945, aged 71. He died on 5 Jan 1945 at St Matthew's.
