Biography

Frederick Morris was born in 1865 in Sunderland. He was the son of William Morris and Henrietta (Sparks) Morris. His father was a labourer.

Frederick's family was still in Sunderland by April 2nd 1871. Besides the parents, there were four children - Mary (13), Matilda (7), Frederick (4) and Henry (0) and also two lodgers. The father was working as a bottle ho labourer.

Frederick's mother Henrietta died in 1879.

By April 3rd 1881, Frederick was boarding in Wedgewood Street, Thornaby with his married sister Jane Baxter and her husband and children. Frederick was sixteen, and working as a labourer.

Frederick married Annie Morrell in 1888 in Middlesbrough. In 1890, a Mrs. Annie Morris was listed under Miscellany of Trades in the Post Office Directory at 29 Cleveland terrace, Thornaby, and this may have been Annie. Frederick and Annie seem not to have had any children.

By 1891, Frederick and Annie were living in Wedgewood Street, Thornaby. Frederick was working as an ironworker, and they had a boarder who was also an ironworker.

By 1901, Frederick and Annie were living in Hope Street, Thornaby. Frederick was working as a licensed victualler and also as a labourer in a shipyard. There was a thirteen-year-old girl working for them as a domestic servant, probably helping run the pub. The only pub listed in Hope Street[1] is the Prince of Wales pub, previously known as the Drum and Monkey. It was a Worthington & co pub.[2]

It's not yet known what became of them after 1901. The pub was said to have been sold to the Batty family at the end of the 19th century and they had it till the 1940s.[3] However the dates here are suspect since Frederick was the landlord there in 1901 according to the census.

Research Notes

1890: 29 Cleveland terrace[4]
Morris Mrs. Annie (under Miscellany of Trades)
The above might be this Annie, since the 1891 census (from the index on familysearch.org) shows only a handful of Morrises living in Thornaby, and she was the only Ann or Annie among them, although in 1891 she isn't listed as having a job. All we can say for sure is if it was her, she wasn't running the Prince of Wales pub that Frederick had in 1901, because that is listed in the name of George Picken in the Beer Retailers section.
Not found after 1901. No deaths registered for Frederick between 1901 and 1911 in the local area.
