Biography

Edward Morris, Gentleman, was born about 1580, perhaps in Wales. He is listed among the Original Settlers of Jamestown Settlement Colony in what is today the state of Virginia.[1] The original settlers arrived on three ships, the Susan Constant, the Discovery and the Godspeed.[2]

According to George Percy, Edward Morris, a Corporal, died suddenly on 14 August 1607.[3] [4]

He has no known or documented offspring in Wales or the colony.

Research Notes

Edward Morish (Morris) has no known or documented offspring in Wales or the colonies nor is he known or documented to have been married. Research has provided no evidence to suggest otherwise. In light of this and in preparation for project protection by Southern Colonies Project, Martha Mattom has been detached as wife. Indications are that she is likely a real person but wrongly attached and currently showing having lived 104 years. Additionally, the following profiles which were attached as children have been detached: John Morris, Edward Morris, Nicholas Morris, and Thomas Morris. Whether these children were siblings of a different father is unknown, several of them are at the time of disconnection entirely unsourced. And, as Edward's point or origin is unknown, so would be his parentage and Charles Morris and Elizabeth Hollowell, both unsourced profiles, have been detached as parents.

The information below is undocumented and is left here to prevent its reintroduction as fact in the biography.

This profile originally stated that Edward Morris was from Blutisham Town, Huntington County, Wales though neither a town or county of those names have ever existed in Wales.

This profile originally read Edward's son, Nicholas Morris (1605-1664) became the Justice of County Court of Northumberland county, Virginia.[citation needed] [Note: this statement came into the profile during an edit in 2017 and cited the Wikipedia page for Jamestown settlers as the source, however, that page gives only his name and date of death.]

There is no such town as "Blutisham" and there has never been a "Huntington County" in Wales. There is Bluntisham, Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire), which is nowhere near Wales. There is also, so far as I can determine, no evidence that Edward Morris who died at Jamestown in 1607 was married or has any descendants.

Martha Newman Morris was born 1609 England the daughter of Col.Robert and Elizabeth King Newman. She married about 1629 Captain Nicholas Morris the son of Edward Morris.

Martha Morris later married Thomas Lane, a wealthy land owner of Northumberland County, Virginia. She signed her Morris inheritance over to her son, Anthony, on 15 July 1665.

Edward b. 1580 is attached in error here as wife of Martha Mattom, b. 1609. But Martha is really the wife of Edward's son, Nicholas. I will detach the marriage relationship here.
