Biography

Alice Morris was born in 1878 in Rainford. She was the second child of James Morris and Rebecca (Wood) Morris. Her father was a collier.

By April 3rd 1881, Alice's family were living in Chapel Field, Rainford. Her dad was working as a collier, and her parents had three little girls - Ann (aged 3), Alice (2) and Ellen (0).

Sadly, Ellen died in 1882. A brother, John, was born in 1884, and then in 1885 Ann died as well, at the age of seven. John also died in 1886.

By April 5th 1891, the family were living in Peter Street, Eccleston. The father was still a collier. As well as Alice, they had four more children - Rebecca (8), Elizabeth (5), James (3) and Mary J (1). Alice's maternal grandfather William Wood was lodging with them. He was still working as a general labourer at the age of 75!

Alice married George Archibald Harper Haines on February 4th 1899, at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston (Anglican).

By March 31st 1901, Alice's parents were still in Peter Street North Eccleston, and Alice and George were living with them. Alice's father was still a collier. George was a glass worker. Alice's four siblings from the previous census were still in the household, and three more girls had been born to her parents - Ann (9), Grace (5) and Georgina (2). Rebecca junior was working as a watch movement worker; Elizabeth (at fourteen) as a labourer in the sheet glass works.

By April 2nd 1911, George and Alice had set up their own household, still in St Helens. George was working as a glass annealer.

George died in 1957 in St Helens. He was 80. Alice died in 1960 in St Helens. She was 81 years old.
