Alexander Morris served as a member of the legislature for Lanark South from 1861 until Confederation, and as a Member of Parliament from Confederation until 1872. He served as Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba from July to December 1872. From October to December 1872, he was acting Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and of the North-West Territories, and was officially sworn in on December 2, 1872. He served as Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Territories until October 7, 1876, and of Manitoba until October 7, 1877.
He was born in Perth, Upper Canada (Ontario), on March 17, 1826. He was the son of William Morris (1786–1858) and Elizabeth Cochran Morris (1795–1857)
