Herb Morris is Notable.

Herbert Morris was a notable American rower, an Olympic athelete that competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics, in the United States.

Herbert Roger "Herb" Morris was born on 16 July 1915 in Seattle, Washington. He was the son of Herbert Clarence Morris, manager of a transfer company, and Gladys Rogers. His paternal grandparents were from Wales.^[1] The family lived in Seattle, King County, Washington.^[2][3]

Herb Morris graduated from high school in Seattle, Washington. He attended the University of Washington, majoring in engineering.

Herb Morris was a member of the champion University of Washington rowing team that was selected to represent the United States in the Men's Eight rowing event at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. By the time of the finals for the Men's Eight, rowers from Nazi Germany had dominated the sport, winning the Gold Medal in the single sculls, double sculls, coxed pair, coxless four and coxed four events. in the finals for the Men's Eight, American rowers found themselves trailing in last place at the half-way point. However, the Americans from Washington rallied over the final 1,000 meters to pass and defeat the heavily favored national crews of Italy and Germany, who came in second and third respectively..^[4]

Herbert Roger "Herb" Morris married Reba Jane Mott (1916-2000) on 1 August 1938 in King County, Washington.^[5] They were the parents of:

On April 11, 1940, the couple resided in Seattle where he was listed as a truck driver for Fremont Ross Transfer.^[6] H Roger Morris registered for the US WWII Draft in Seattle, King, Washington, on 16 October 1940, prior to the couple traveling to Valdez, Alaska.^[7] On October 23, 1940, he and his wife were lodging in Valdez, Alaska, where he was working as first mate on a dredge.^[8]

In the 1950 census H Roger Morris (age 34), a Dredging Engineer for a dredging and construction company, was the married head of household in Seattle, King, Washington.^[9]

In 1979, Herb Morris was inducted into the University of Washington Husky Hall of Fame along with the other seven members of the University of Washington crew.

Herbert Roger Morris died (age 94) on 22 July 2009 in King, Washington.^[10][11] He was buried in the Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Lake Forest Park, King County, Washington.^[12]

When he passed away in 2009, Herb Morris was the last surviving member of the 1936 Gold Medal crew. The story of the team was chronicled in the 2013 work "The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics" by Daniel James Brown.^[13][14]
