George Morris was born on 24th March 1897 in Queensland (Australia). He was the son of Luke Morris and Matilda Harris. [1] His father died whilst George was still young. His mother married again in 1902.
On 8th February 1916 George enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, Australia's overseas expeditionary force for the (First World) War. [2] He embarked at Sydney on 20th April aboard SS Hawkes Bay with other reinforcements for the 15th Australian Infantry Battalion. [3] The battalion's first major action in France was at Pozières in August 1916.Aged 19 years, he was killed in action on 28th August 1916 in Pozières. [4] George Morris's name is located at panel 77 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France, and on the Cenotaph at Beaudesert, Queensland. [5]
Following the war his family was issued both his British War Medal and Victory Medal.
