Biography

Samuel M. Morris was born November 12, 1784, in South Carolina. On April 7, 1808, Samuel married Mary Saint, a daughter of Thomas Saint and Jane (Parsons) Saint. Children of Samuel and Mary include:

  • Thomas Jasper Morris, born May 16, 1809, in Fairfield county, South Carolina, died May 1, 1876
  • James Barksdale Morris, born September 10, 1813, in South Carolina, died December 2, 1886, in Tennessee
  • Samuel Morris, born December 20, 1815, in South Carolina, died October 11, 1883, in Bedford county, Tennessee, married Nancy Massey
  • Rachel Morris born March 10, 1819, died March 26, 1914, in new Herman, Bedford county, Tennessee [1] married Derrel Jesse Hart
  • Rebecca Morris, born July 20, 1823, died June 18, 1910, married Isaac Bynum

Samuel came to Bedford County, Tennessee in 1818 with his wife and four oldest children. Since census records show that his wife and oldest children were born in South Carolina, he had probably been living there for several years before coming to Bedford county. Samuel was a farmer and a carpenter. He settled in the 22nd Civil District near Dean (New Hermon) in what is now known as "Morris Hollow." Samuel was received in the Mr. Hermon Baptist Church by experience and baptism in 1841. He became quite active in the church. The church minutes reveal that he was a delegate to the Duck River Association in 1845, 1846, 1847 and 1851. In July 1848 he was appointed as "Trustee to see to the recording of the deed for our meetinghouse and land."

Samuel served in the War of 1812. In her Declaration of a Widow for Pension, his wife Mary states that she was married under the name of Mary Saint, and "...Samuel Morris drew a land warrant for 80 acres in his lifetime and after his death I as his widow drew a warrant for 80 acres more and since that time I have not seen his discharge." This document is executed in Jackson County, Alabama, on 17 March 1871. Mary signed with "her mark." Mary's application for bounty land was executed on 8 Sep 1855, at which time she was a widow. Samuel enlisted at Winnsborough, Fairfield District, South Carolina, and served from October 6, 1814 to March 8, 1815, in Captain William Johnson's Company, South Carolina Militia.

Samuel died February 25, 1852, at the age of 67 years and is buried in the Morris Cemetery on Wiseman Road in Bedford county, Tennessee. Mary (Saint) Morris died May 21, 1881, at the age of 95 or 96 years and is buried in the Bynum Cemetery, in Maynard Cove, Jackson county, Alabama.
