Biography

James was born in 1789. James was a blacksmith at Fort Albany for the Hudson Bay Company. He had a common law relationship, probably starting about 1818, with Frances Sanderson. Her father David Sanderson was a voyaguer with the Hudson Bay Company, involved in a relationship with an Indian woman (possibly Cree). Frances was their daughter. Upon the arrival of Rev. George Barnsley in 1840 to establish a Methodist mission at Moose Factory, Frances and James formalized their marriage.[1]
