Stephen was a farmer and a justice of the peace. He served in the Civil War in the 10th Kentucky Calvary, commanded by Colonel Adam R. Johnson, under Captain Henry Clay Merriwether in Company H. He moved to Hopkins County, Kentucky around 1886.
