Herbert Seth Morse was born on May 14, 1852 in Union, Connecticut to Orrin Morse and Helen Horton. As an adult he was a butcher and operated a provisions store, and lived in Putnam, Connecticut. He married Sarah Helena Fox in 1874, and they had four children, of which three lived to maturity. He died on March 23, 1938.[1]
Herbert's grandson, Herbert Clark, provides a good summary of Herbert Seth's live in an unpublished family history:[2]
Herbert S. Morse was born May 14, 1852, in Union, Conn., and removed with his parents to North Ashford, being at this time one year old. His boyhood was passed in the schools of the latter town and in Union, where he was a pupil of Miss Sarah, a daughter of Captain Chauncy Paul. Subsequently, he entered the West Woodstock High School, and later enjoyed two years at the Woodstock Academy, continuing at his studies until he was twenty years old. About this time, his parents removed to Putnam, and he engaged for one term as a teacher in Pomfret, becoming the bookkeeper for the B. Longden & Co., of which firm his father was a member. Two years later he took a wagon meat route for his father, and continued to operate this for about four years. in 1878 Mr. Longden died, and the business was continued by the admission of R.H. Bradley and A.C. Stetson, the firm name changing to O. Morse & Co., continuing this for two years. When Orrin Morse withdrew from the business on the account of failing health the other members continued the business under the name of Morse, Stetson & Company, and this remained until the dissolution of the firm five years later. In reorganizing this business Herbert S. Morse conducted under his own name, for one year having P.L. Darling associated with him. In 1889 he erected a more convenient place of business on North School Street, and met public approbation, the business being conducted as a meat market and provision store, and also including the sale of fish, being, in fact, one of the best establishments of its kind in Windham County, complete, up-to-date, with modern conveniences.
Mr. Morse was a member of the Putnam Council, No. 340, Royal Arcanum, of Putnam, and was socially connected with the Heptasophs of this city. Although a very ardent and zealous Republican, he would not consent to hold any office, which was just so much loss to the city, as Mr. Morse was eminently qualified for any of the positions of responsibility. Both he and his wife belonged to the Universalist Church.
On Dec. 27, 1874, Mr. Morse was united in marriage with Sarah Helena Fox, born Aug. 10, 1851, in West Woodstock, daughter of Abiel and Lucy (Ingalls) Fox, the former of which operated a general store and was postmaster at West Woodstock for over 30 years. Both he and his wife died at their home there.
