Biography

Frederick was the son of John and Damaris Morse (nee Bailey). John was a Coal Miner and they lived in Yorkley. [1]

In 1841 Frederick, aged 12 was living with his family - parents and 7 siblings in Yorkley. His father was a Coal Miner. [2]

In 1851 Frederick was 22 and living with his family in Yorkley. His illegitimate son by Elizabeth (Archer) Adams, 2 year old, Frederick Archer was also there 'at Nurse' [3]. Frederick and Elizabeth never married.

In 1855 he married Matilda Phipps. The marriage record reads: Fred Morse, 27, bach, collier, Yorkley, father; John Morse, collier. Matilda Phipps, 20, spins, Whitecroft, father; Thos Phipps, blacksmith. Banns. Wit: James Phipps, Mary Jane Morris. [4]

By 1861 Frederick and Matilda lived with their 2 daughters, his mother. Damaris and a John Thomas Morse, her grandson aged 8. Son Frederick Archer lived there as well and was a Coal Miner at the age of just 12. [5]

In 1871 John and Matilda lived with daughters, Emily and Phoebe his Mother and John Thomas in Yorkley. [6]

Frederick died aged 49 in 1878. He is buried in All Saints Churchyard, Viney Hill, Forest of Dean. The gravestone reads "Loving Memory of Frederick Morse who died June 16th 1878 aged 49 years. Also of Matilda who died Feb 25th 1910 aged 74 years. Also of John, Harriett, Phoebe and Agnes their beloved children."[7]

Frederick is on the registration list of Freeminers . [1] [8]

In 1882 his daughter Emily married in Croydon and noted her fathers' occupation as Coal Pit proprietor. [9]

Frederick's granddaughter Freda Phipps wrote a fascinating account of her life at Stone Cottage, including her family. She mention's Frederick, "Morse. He was born in 1839 and brought up by John and Damaris. In 1855 Fred married Matilda and they had two sons, John and George who was my father, and three daughters, Emily, Phoebe and Agnes. My father was born in this house on June 14th, 1877." [10]
