Biography

Jane was born to James and Sarah. She was baptised on February 14th at Lydney. Her father James was a Coal Seller and they lived in Lydney. [1]

In 1841 Jane lived with her parents and siblings James and Elizabeth in Lydney. [2] By 1851 Jane had 2 illegitimate children, Edwin [3] and John. [4]John later took the surname Hall but Edwin didn't. On Edwin's marriage certificate he left blank father's name and occupation. Jane and the children lived with her parents and brother James in Lydney. She was a laundress and listed as unmarried. [5]

Around 1851 Jane must have married Thomas Hall who had been born in Blisworth, Northamptonshire, as Jane's son John took Hall as his surname and in 1861 the family lived in Lydney with Jane's widowed father, her unmarried brother James plus her husband Thomas and the 5 children, 4 boys and a girl. Thomas was a Road Contractor. Edwin and John helped Thomas at work, despite being only 14 and 10. [6] In 1871 the family were living in Lydney and they had 2 more boys, Frederick and Harry. Thomas was listed as a labourer. Sarah was now 50 years old. [7] In 1881 the couple just had son Harry, aged 13 at home but they also had their grand daughter Louisa living there. She was aged 1 and had been born in Silvertown, Essex [8] Thomas died in 1888 aged 75 and in 1891 the widowed Jane and her granddaughter Louisa were living together in Lydney. Jane was a Charwoman. Her niece Elizabeth Ellaway was living a few doors down. [9] In 1901 Jane lived alone at 20 Albert Street, Lydney. Now 80 she was still listed as a Charwoman, employed. [10]

Jane died aged 87 and was buried at Lydney on September 28th 1907. She had been living in Chepstow. [11]

Hello!

I'm currently working on a One Place Study of Lydney, Gloucestershire. As part of the study, I'm simply adding the study category to this profile. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to let me know! The category addition will not change the profile at all, only categorise it within the study, so rest assured that I am not taking over the profile in any way. If you'd like to learn more about a One Place Study and what it's about, you can read more about the project here.

Thanks, Amy Utting.
