William was born in Yorkley Slade, Gloucestershire, England, in 1897.[1] He was the son of William Morse and Lucy James, and one of ten children. He was enumerated in the 1901 [2] and 1911 census [3] residing with his family. In 1911, as a fourteen year old, he stated his occupation as "Collier Belt Boy Above Ground".
