Mary Ann was born in 1826 in Bowdoinham, Maine, the daughter of Nathan Morse Jr. and Lucy (Lathrop) Morse.
The family migrated to Bedford, Ohio in 1833. Her father died in 1838, when she was 12.
She married William Shuart in Gates Mills, Ohio in 1849.
