Lionel Charles Mortimer, born in Downton, lied about his age so he could sign up for the army in the Wiltshire Regiment a year early, got wounded and lived the rest of his life with shrapnel in his back. He served as a policeman in India and as a plasterer with his father when back in Salisbury. He lived in a house he helped to build and after retiring as an MOD policeman in Porton continued to work as the man who took in and sent out the deliveries at Russell & Bromley (fondly known as Mort). Died of pneumonia in Salisbury Infirmary[1]
