William was born in Scotland in 1854, son of Thomas Mortimer and Grace Thom. His mother died when William was one year old. In 1857, he traveled to America with father, his new wife, Mary and his brother, Thomas Jr. and sister, Mary, on the steamship New World, which arrived in New York two days after William's 3rd birthday on November 12, 1857. He became a U.S. citizen in Illinois in 1878. William married Mary Evaline Bentley in March of 1890. They had three children, but only their son, Roy survived childhood. The family moved from Illinois to Kansas between 1900 and 1910. William died in Kansas 1943 at the age of 88. He is buried with his wife in Spence Cemetery in Fairbury, Illinois.
