Biography

William was born on 28 August 1799 in York, Yorkshire, England. His parents were James Mortimer and Mary Watson. Parey Watson was his maternal grand-father. [1]

William was baptised on 3 September 1799 at Saint Sampson, York, Yorkshire, England. [1] [2]

William married Mary Beecroft on 30 January 1826 at Hull, East Yorkshire, England. [3] [4]

In 1836 William and Mary had a son Charles Wilson Mortimer who is assumed to have died in infancy as no records beyond his baptism can be found. In 1839 they had a daughter (Mary Ann) who died in infancy and is buried with her grand-mother Mary Whitehead.

William was recorded in the 1841 England census (taken 6 June 1841) living at 24 Canning Street, Hull, Yorkshire, England. He was aged 40 (ie 40-44). With him is his wife Mary (40) and their daughter Martha (9). William is a Shoe Maker. [5]

From the General Directory of Kingston-upon-Hull and York 1851:
Mortimer, William, boot and shoe maker, 45 Portland Street.

William was recorded in the 1851 England census (taken on 30 March 1851) living at 45 Portland Street, Hull, Yorkshire, England, aged 51. At that time he was a Cordwainer & Traveller. Also living there was his wife Mary (50), his daughter Martha (18, School Mistress) and a lodger (Martha Walker). [6]

William appeared in the England 1861 census (taken 7 April 1861) residing at 5 Portland Street, Kingston-upon-Hull, East Yorkshire, England. He was recorded as aged 61 and a Commercial Traveller. With him was his wife Mary (62). [7]

On 21 November 1863 he was residing on Portland Street, Hull, East Yorkshire, England when his wife Mary passed away. [8]

William was recorded on the 1871 England census (taken 2 April 1871) living at 49 Portland St, Hull, East Yorkshire, England. He was then 71 and described as a widower and a Hawker of small wares. With him is his Grand-son William Mortimer Edmonds aged 11. [9]

Cannot find William in the England 1881 census and neither a death record in Hull. I also cannot find any records of his daughter Martha after 1871 - where did they go?
