Emma Mortimer was born in Calne, Wiltshire in the third quarter of 1838.

She was the daughter of Jane and John Mortimer.

The 1851 census records her aged 13, living with her parents and five younger sisters in Calne, Wiltshire.

Emma emigrated to Victoria with her family on the ship Sabrina in 1857, aged 18.
She married John Ruglen, a shipwright and immigrant from Scotland, in 1858 in Victoria. Emma was 19; John was 15 years her senior.

Emma and John were the parents of ten children: John (1859), James (1860), Annie (1862), Alfred (1864), Emma Jane (1866), James Peter (1868), Elizabeth Martha (1870), Lilias May (1872), Henry Alexander(1874), and Albert Edward (1876).
James died at the age of five; James Peter at 20 months and Henry at 10 months.
John died as a result of an accident in October 1882 when Emma would have been 43. Lilias died the following year aged 10.
Ten years later, Emma married Charles Boehme, from Rhodesia, in 1892.

She is buried in Box Hill cemetery with her son, Albert Edward Ruglen and his wife Sarah Jane Ruglen. [9]
