John was born 16 June 1826[1] in Montgomery County, Georgia, the son of Thomas Dennis Moseley and Amelia Lavinia Johnson Moseley.
John H. Mosely and Edith Thompson were married 8 April 1847 in Montgomery County, Georgia where he was a farmer[2][3].

In 1850[4], they lived in Montgomery County with their children Arcady and Thomas B.
In 1860[5], they still lived in Montgomery County with their children Arcady, Thomas, Lucretia, Keziah, [[Moseley-1588|Mary (Polly), and Dennis.
John H. Mosely enlisted as a private on 4 March 1862 in Montgomery County. On 12 May 1862 he was transferred to Company H, Georgia Infantry Regiment, 47th Brigade, Mercer's Army of Tennessee.[6].

John came home to see his family once after he enlisted in the Civil War. After he went back from his visit he was never heard from again by his family. They were notified that he was killed 10June 1862 at the Battle of Secessionville at James Island, South Carolina. Court House records at Montgomery County, Georgia bear this out. Witnesses were H.M. Peterson and G.W. Peterson.

He was buried in North Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery, Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia[1].
His widow Edith (called Eda in this correspondence), petitioned to receive her husband's pay due to him, swearing an oath before the Montgomery County justice of the peace Chesley B. McLemore that she was indeed the widow and mother of seven children, also sworn by Daniel W. Morrison, a family acquaintance.

His son John Henry Hardeman Moseley died in 1930[7].
