John was a blacksmith who had bought his father's land in 1793 and sold it all on June 18, 1798 to Joseph Leatherman in preparation for the migration to Fayette County, Pennsylvania. John is also recorded on the West Bethlehem tax list in Washington County, Pennsylvania for 1796, and known as a farmer and blacksmith. There are reportedly 3 deeds in Washington County indicating John bought property on Plum Run in West Bethlehem Township as early as 1777. It was near the Plum Run Baptist Church which was part of the Redstone Baptist Association. The Washington County Orphan's Court recorded in November, 1799, a petition from Susannah to appoint a guardian for her daughter Mary. William Hargrove and Henry Hardsaugh were appointed. William Hawkins was the administrator of Susannah's estate for which he, Michael Leatherman and Michael Teague posted bond on February 28, 1804.
