Hugh and his party, including Jupiter Mosman, discovered gold in a creek at the back of Charters Towers in 1871.
Hugh lost his arm in 1882, in an accident with dynamite.
Mosman Street, the main street in Charters Towers, Queensland was named after him.
Hugh Mosman entered the Legislative Assembly in 1891, but later resigned in 1905. He was allowed to keep his title.
In later life Hugh pursued his interest in Horse Racing, and owned several, including Balfour, who won the 1902 Queensland Turf Club Derby.
The Honourable Hugh Mosman passed away on the 15th of November 1909, at his residence, Easton Gray in Soudan Street, Toowong, Queensland, Australia. He never married.

Hugh was well connected through his sisters who both married Queensland Premiers, Harriet, who married Sir Thomas McIlwraith, and Cecilia, who married Arthur Hunter Palmer. His house was situated where the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology now sits.
