James and Jane Gordon, married in 1703, are of Scotch-Irish extraction. Records show that they sailed from County Down, Northern Ireland, in 1715 with their 10 year old son James (B. 04/ 10/1705). They like many other new arrivals in America arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and settled in Chester County near Philadelphia. Birth and burial records show that James Moss Jr.’s children (James, Joseph, and William were in Chester County. The direct line son Joseph died in Fayette County, Pa on 10/22/1861. His seven children, Mary, Jacob, John, Anna, Sarah, Margaret, and Elizabeth were born in Fayette County. The same was true of the next direct line John. His children, Joseph, Sarah, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Jacob, Ann, John Jr., Robert, Margaret, James R. , and Hannah were all born in Fayette County prior to 1818. The records show that James Moss married Grace Patterson and their six children (William, Joseph, John, Samuel, James Moss Jr, and Lizzie were born in West Alexander, Washington County between 1844 and 1854. The next direct line, Samuel married Rachel Crow in 1881 and their seven children (Joseph, Jane, Willie, James Woods, Georgia, Margaret, and Mary Myrtle were born between 1882 and 1896 in West Alexander, Pa.
