Biography

Richard ap Hywel was most likely the child of Hywel ap Ieuan and Margaret ferch Gruffudd, daughter and heiress of Gloddaeth. He was born about 1468, based on his recorded age when he inherited his mother's estates in 1532.[1]

The mother of Richard's children is named as Catherine, daughter of Thomas Salusbury, the elder.

Prior to Richard's death, he was the sinecure rector of Whitford, Flintshire - Meaning, he had a position that required little work, but it yielded an income.

In 1527, Richard and his mother Margaret were given a release by his brother Henry Salesbury for a windmill in Conwey and other property in Clothyayth in the commote of Cruthyn, Caernarvonshire. The release describes them as "Henry Salesbury ... Margaret vergh Gruffith ap Rys, his mother, and Richard ap hoell ap Ieuan vichan, his brother.[2]

Richard eventually inherited Gloddaeth Hall from his mother's estate and Tre'r Garnedd. She died in 1532 and the escheator recorded that Richard, aged 64. was her heir.[1]

Richard passed away 7th February 1539, according to the Julian Calendar. [3]

On 2 March 1539/40, his sons Piers ap Richard ap Howell, gent, and Thomas ap Richard ap Howell entered into a bond for 500 marks "to abide by the Award ... concerning all variances between the said parties touching the goods and chattels of Richard ap Howell, deceased."[4]

Research Notes

The original sources indicate his Last Name at Birth (LNAB) was "ap Hywel" or "ap Howel". It appears that his sons had the LNAB of "ap Richard" and that the surname "Mostyn" was not adopted until later.
