Biography

Origins

There were two English men called Adam Mott about the same age, and who immigrated about the same time. Both men had sons named Adam and Gershom. One Adam Mott lived in Rhode Island, and one lived in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. This profile represents Gershom Mott, the son of Adam Mott of Long Island.

Gershom's mother was the daughter of Rev Obadiah Bowne. This Gershom Mott lived most of his life near and with his mother's family in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He is mentioned in many of the Bowne Wills as a family member.

Public Life

"1697, Nov. 30. Gershum Moote was commissioned by Gov. Andrew Hamilton, for one year, High Sheriff of Monmouth County.
"In 1707, 1708, 1709, and in 1710, he was Member of the Colonial Assembly, from the Eastern Division of New Jersey, when he was expelled because of factional fights, but was returned in 1713."[2]

Death and Legacy

The will of Gershom Mott was written 15 Feb 1730 and proved 20 Mar 1733.[3]
