James was born on 23 March 1844 in Guildford, Western Australia, the son of Abraham Moulton and Mary Jones. [1][2]
He married Sarah Chiverell on 9 October 1861 at Guildford.[1] Three children were born before Sarah died in 1867.
James later married Sarah Strange on 7 January 1875 at Gilgering.[1] Their ten children were born over the next twenty years.
James worked at York. He employed three Ticket of Leave men at Northbourne, York in 1866. James was based at Beverley, Hillside in 1875, Rockdale in 1878, Willie Kine in 1880, Deeding or "Deedening" in 1888 and "Boyadine " in 1895.[1]

On Friday morning last, the 10th March, James Moulton, of Deedening, near Boyadine, committed suicide by hanging himself in his own house. It appears that the deceased had been drinking heavily previous to the date on which he ended his life. On Thursday, the 9th March, the deceased with his wife and family proceeded to the residence of Mr. Strange, where a party was being held. After spending a pleasant evening deceased left the residence by himself and proceeded to his own home, and before the arrival of his family had committed the deed. On Friday afternoon an inquest was held at Beverley, the jury consisting of Dr. Blanchard, coroner, and Messrs. Horace Smith, Thos Edwards, and H. Davey.
