OBITUARY - Mrs. MARIA ANNE EDWARDS ^[3]
Brief reference was made in our last issue to the death at the Beverley Hospital on the 20th inst, of an old and respected resident of the district in the person of Mrs Maria Anne Edwards. Deceased was the widow of the late William J. Edwards whose death following an accident occurred at the Hospital the previous year. She was the mother of a family of sons all well known in these parts and was a sister of Mr. L. J. Moulton, late of the Dale, and now residing in Beverley.
The late Mrs Edward was 82 years of age and was born at Guildford being a daughter of the late Mr, and Mrs James Matthew Moulton. Her Grandparents were amongst the State's earliest settlers, and both her parents were born at Guildford, being among the first white children born in the infant colony. The family later shifted to York where Mrs Moulton died when the subject of our notice was only two years of age. She attended the first school established at Gilgering during which time she lived with a family on an adjacent farm. As a young woman she met and married at York Mr W. J Edwards, also a descendant of early colonists, and to the couple in succeeding years five sons were born.
The family over the years resided at many centres. Mr Edwards, following occupations at various times at Denmark, East Beverley and Cuballing. Later they settled at Beverley. For a great many years prior to her demise the late Mrs Edwards had been a semi-invalid but despite this great handicap she contrived to remain a bright and cheery soul whom to know was to like.
One son (Eric) was killed in France in the last war and those remaining to mourn her passing are: Oliver (East Beverley) Bevan (Katanning) Roy (Cue) and Rede (Beverley). Besides her brother Mr L J Moulton, there are a number of step- brothers and step sisters resident in the district
