Biography[1]

Robert Charles Anderson estimates a birth of 1603 based on his approximate age at marriage. No origins are known, although one might be suggested by the 7 Oct 1647 record: William Jones of/near Canterbury, county Kent, [England] appointed Mr. Francis Norton of Charlestown attorney to recover goods now in possession of Ralph Mousall of Charlestown..."

Others have suggested he was from Norwich, Norfolk, England, but without source.

He married about 1628 Alice _____.

He and Alice likely came as part of Winthrop's fleet as he and his wife were admitted to the Boston church as #72 ad #73, which translates to late winter 1630/31.

They were dismissed from Boston church 14 Oct 1632, and admitted as founding members of Charlestown church 2 Nov 1632.

He died on 30 April 1657 in Charlestown, MA. His will, dated 13 Apr 1657, codicil dated on 28 Apr 1657; inventoried 30 May 1657.[2] In it he names:

  • son John
  • wife Ales
  • son Thomas
  • daughters Elizabeth & Mary (who were daughters in law)
  • brother John Mousall
  • dau Ruth Wood (who was a ward, not his real daughter; she was a minor daughter of Edward and Ruth (____) Wood, both of whom died in 1642.
  • daughter Mary Gove, under 18, also a ward
  • cousin Nathaniel Ball
  • cousin Mary Waine
  • many friends

Anderson recognizes only two children -- John and Thomas.

Mousall-1 and Mousall-73 appear to represent the same person because: Similar birth dates, same death date & location, same wife first name.

Should be merged with Mousall-1. There was only one Puritan Great Migration immigrant named Ralph Mousall. The estimated birth year here is at the farthest-back end of the range of possibilities; the one given in Mousall-1 is toward the more recent end of that span. The allegation of a birthplace of Norwich seems to be based on nothing more than the assumption that if he was buddies with Edward Wood (enough to take Edward's youngest surviving daughter under his wing after Edward & wife died), and Edward Wood came from Norwich (which was a falsehood popularly believed for many years), then Ralph must have likewise come from Norwich.
