John Mousall migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Great Migration (Series 2), by R. C. Anderson, vol. 5, p. 186) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
The origins of John Mousall are not known. He shows up in Charlestown with a wife in 1634. He was born about 1595, based on depositions he made in 1658 and 1661/2 in which he gave his age as 63 and 66, respectively. He had a brother Ralph who was in Charlestown by 1630.[1] (One merged profile stated that he was born in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England
John and his wife were admitted to the church in Charlestown in 1634. He was admitted as a Freeman on September 30, 1634, They moved to Woburn in 1641, where John was elected Deacon. John was one of the original signers of the orders for the founding of the town of Woburn.[2]
The maiden name of John's wife Joanna apparently is not known definitively. In 1977, Crandall and Coffman gave Joanna's name as Thompson, stating that they were married in 1628.[3] No source is given. It appears that the last name is based on the fact that John mentioned "brother James Thomson" in his Will, and that John was an overseer on the estate of his friend James Thompson Sr. of Woburn.[4] Torry shows Joanna's name as "Joanna [Thompson?][5] Torry shows no other marriage for this John Mousall.
John could read and write, as he signed his Will and the inventory of his estate included books. He also served in various civil functions, both in Charles and in Woburn.
He died on March 27 (27th of 1st month), 1665, at Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[6] He left a widow, Joanna, a son, John Mousall, and a daughter, Eunice, the wife of John Brooks. The name of Mousall (pronounced Mowz-zall) as a surname, is now extinct from the place.[7]
Will
His Will was dated June 19, 1660, and was proved on April 4, 1665. In his Will he mentioned:
"beloved wife Joanna"
son Brookes' three children
grandchildren Sara, Unis and Joanna Brookes.
son John Mousall, who married John Brooks' sister
son John Brookes
my brother James Thomson and Allen Convers (probably not related but brothers in church)
