Robert Mowat was born in Scotland.

Robert the son of David Murray and Helen Graham was born in Kinneff and Catterline, Kincardineshire, Scotland on 11 August 1813. [1]He had 7 siblings: Anne Mowat, Thomas Mowat, Margaret Mowat, John Mowat, Elizabeth Mowat, Alexander Mowat and David Mowat.

He wed Janet Guthrie in Belhelvi,e Aberdeen, Scotland on 10th July 1842. [2]

They had 13 children during their marriage :

  3. James Mowat
  4. William Mowat
  5. Elizabeth Mowat.
  6. Anne Mowat
  7. Alexander Mowat
  8. David Mowat
  9. Janet Mowat
  10. John Mowat
  11. Peter Mowat
  12. Graham Mowat
  13. Mary Ann Mowat

In 1851 he and Janet were living in Hopshill Belhelvie with 4 children: Thomas, James, William] and Elizabeth . Robert was a farm overseer and the family employed Helen Duncan, a 17 year old house servant [3]

In 1861 he and Janet were living in Gelrivie Farm House Dun Angus Scotland with children Thomas, James, William ,Elizabeth ,Ann, Alexander, David, and Janet. Robert was a farmer of 90 acres employing 2 labourers [4]

In 1871 he was a gardener living in Liddles Close, Brechin Burgh, Angus Scotland with wife Janet and children Janet Mowat and twins Mary Ann and Graham.[5]

In 1891 he was living with 3 grand children in Brechin in 1a St Ninians Sq. His age was given as 77 and he was a gardener.[6]

He died in 1898 aged 84 [7]

His gravestone bears the inscription ""THE BURYING GROUND OF ROBERT GRAHAM MOWATT In memory of his beloved wife Janet Guthrie, who died 6th Jan 1882, aged 61 years, also of their children Isabella, David and John, who died in infancy, also their grand-child Daisy Reid, born 30th June 1893, died 9th Feb 1898, the above Robert G. Mowatt, born 13th Aug 1814, died 18th Feb 1898, also their daughter Ann Guthrie Mowatt born 31st Dec 1852, died 4th June 1920" [8]

Research note

As was sadly the case at this time three of Robert 's children died in infancy : Isabella, David and John.

Robert's date of birth is incorrect on his gravestone which may be due to a relative not knowing actual date of birth.
