Biography

John was born in 1845. He was the son of John Mowbray and Margaret Bowie.

John was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and at Orr's Military School. Upon leaving he was articled to an accountant, Charles Niven, although it was intended that he should go into law.

He followed his parents and emigrated to New Zealand in 1864. He and his brothers arrived on the ship "British Trident".

Initially he went to Thames which was having a mining boom, but returned to Auckland and worked in a brewery business before he joined his father in founding a business in 1868. They had the firm Messrs. J. M. & J Mowbray. They were brokers and land and estate agents. John was one of the earliest sharebrokers in Auckland, taking out his license in 1872. He was one of the oldest members of the Auckland Stock Exchange and had served as its chairman.

He married Catherine Maud Harris in 1879. She was the daughter of John Hyde Harris, solicitor, of Dunedin.

He passed away in 1911. He was buried at Purewa Cemetery in Block E Row 50 Plot 151.
